Scripture Union Daily Guide 10 September 2025 Outline

Jesus Himself is telling us here about His second coming. He likens the waiting of ten virgins – five wise and five foolish. Find the similarities and differences between the two groups of virgins in the passage. In Matthew 25:9a, the wise would not give some oil to the foolish because the timing is wrong. Jesus wants us to be adequately prepared at all times. In Scripture, oil is usually symbolic of the Holy Spirit. In our world today, many profess to be Christians but live contrary to God’s Word. We should allow the Holy Spirit to guide and control our lives each day. It is the prerogative of the bridegroom to choose when to arrive. It was the responsibility of the virgins to be prepared for any unforeseen situation by carrying along with them extra oil for their lamps.

Notice what happened to the two groups of virgins in Matthew 25:5b. All were waiting for the final trumpet call (Matthew 24:31, the midnight cry, Matthew 25:6). The watchword is readiness (see Matthew 25:13). Only those who are ready for Christ’s return will be welcomed by Him into His kingdom. And the time to be ready is now. There is no repentance in the grave.
